Rethinking Marketing: 2022 Finds Pandemic Increased Workload, Reduced Departmental Resources

Rethinking Marketing Survey

Survey results found 52% of marketers felt the pandemic left the department with more work and less resources.

26 April 2022 – New York, New York

SJT Marketing LLC and YourMarketer LLC jointly released Rethinking Marketing: 2022 a Survey of Today’s Marketing Department. Performed in the closing months of 2021, the survey found that Marketing departments in the U.S., across industries, experienced major changes during the pandemic, drastically modifying their strategies under pressure from reduced headcount and budgets.

The survey found that 34% of 71 respondents were responsible for roles outside the marketing department, in addition to their marketing job, which caused inefficiency in resource use around finding and building a loyal client base. 59% of marketers are handling over 5 core job responsibilities, making it difficult to maintain high level performance and meet the expectations of key stakeholders.

Number of Job Functions Marketers Currently Have

Said CEO of YourMarketer Jennifer Palmer Farrington, “We wanted to put into numbers what we were hearing from our marketing colleagues regarding changes in their departments. We were concerned to find that 81% of marketers felt both that their workload had increased due to the pandemic, and that 43% saw their budgets cut.”

During the Pandemic, Companies Decreased Marketing Budgets and Increased Demands

Highlights from the survey:

  • Marketing has input into strategy and budget but requires leadership approval to execute. Despite 52% of respondents stating that their CMP/VP was on the organization leadership team, they require approval on individual budget items. Only 20% of CMPs/VPs have full approval of the marketing budget and activities.
  • Marketers do not have enough resources to excel in their jobs. They are experts at making more from less. However, the past two years have taken a toll on the Marketing Department, with 52% of respondents stating that not having enough resources is their top stressor. Inflation and the increase in ad costs are additional difficulties.
  • Marketing department requests are up, and the expectations are unrealistic. 50% of Marketing Departments saw an increase in the number of requests and felt that expectations were unrealistic.
  • Marketers are nearly evenly split, 52/48 as to whether they need to say yes to every project that lands on their desk. Knowing when to say “no” to a project is important to keeping marketing strategy on track. If a project does not fit into the approved strategy, team members need to be able to say “no” and pass, so they can keep building the business on time.
  • Marketers, for the most part, were not asked to give up a portion of their salary, but those who did haven’t seen it return. Only 33% of the marketers surveyed had to give up a portion of their salary and/or benefits during the pandemic. Out of those, only 40% had the salary and/or benefits returned to them.

President of SJT Marketing Sara Janjigian Trifiro added, “We’ve all gone through challenging times; we now need to analyze our departments and make sure we are structuring and supporting them for success – for the marketers and for the company.”

COVID-19 Up-Ends Business Structures – YourMarketer Provides an Answer

YourMarketer bridges the gap between marketers and businesses.

11 AUGUST 2020 – Fairfield, Connecticut

YourMarketer LLC launched today as an online freelance marketing support solution for professional services firms. The platform delivers expert freelance talent carefully vetted for background and experience, and will be serving the accounting, tax, consulting, legal, management consulting, financial services and technology industries.

Said site founder, Jennifer Palmer Farrington, “While other sites provide general freelancers, we are the first to focus on the B2B service experience. This ensures that clients receive a tailored sector-specific marketing expertise with an understanding of what creates success.”

Jennifer added, “I’ve noticed that whenever there are downturns in the marketplace, especially as we see now during COVID-19, it is often core business staff like marketers to be impacted first. Unfortunately, the workload does not disappear during an economic downturn, and the increased stress and capacity on a reduced team leads to suboptimal outcomes. Firms have to be competitive. We help promote businesses while keeping marketing payroll streamlined.”

She continues, “By hiring an experienced freelancer who knows your industry and business nuance, you save time and receive a higher quality product back. They are truly, your marketers.”

Creating Your Freelancer Projects

CREATING A NEW FREELANCER PROJECTS

You will be creating “Projects” for each of the services you provide to make it easy for a Company to purchase. For example, if I create marketing materials, such as brochures, presentations, sales sheets, I would create a project with a price associated for each – one for brochures, one for presentations, one for sales sheets. Each would be listed separately as a “Project.”

Let’s get started.

1. Log in

Log into yourmarketer.com using your “seller” username and password.

2. Profile Menu

Navigate to your Profile Menu Dropdown to Projects” and Post New”

Creating a Project

3. Post New Project form

This will open up the “Post New Project” form.
    • Choose a snappy title for your “Project” to get the attention of the Company. For a brochure, I might use, “Beautifully Designed Brochures”
    • Next, choose how you will Price your project. You can use an hourly rate for something like a “Strategy Discussion,” but for a brochure I would use a fixed price. I’ll use $1200 fixed price. You can also choose to price your project hourly, weekly, monthly or offer a three tier package.
    • Select the Category and Subcategory, for each project. For this example, it would be Graphics & Design for the Category and Brochure Design would be the Subcategory

4. Description

Under Description, describe in as much detail as possible what it is your service is and what will be delivered so that there is no misunderstanding between you and the Company. This is what you would include in a proposal for your service. If you are doing design work, will you include the design files as well as the PDF? Be as specific as possible. For our example, my description for a brochure would be:

I will design for you a compelling 8-page brochure with stock photos or infographics or using your own photos. This price includes:

      • One-hour strategy discussion on brochure needs
      • Initial draft
      • Up to 3 revisions of the initial draft
      • InDesign file and all images used
      • Print Ready PDF for you to send to your local printer
      • Viewable PDF for the web

5. Tags

Tags allow users to search on the website and find the services they are looking for. Add here any keywords used for your project and be sure to include the Category and Subcategory (Service and Subservice) as tags as well. For my example, I used “brochure” “infographics” InDesign” “PDF” “Graphics & Design” and “Brochure Design”

6. Instructions to the Company

What should the Company provide you with to start the project quickly? Include Instructions to the Company and slide it to the right to make it visible to them. If you don’t want to include any instructions skip it, but I find it helpful. For the brochure, I put, “Please send me any current materials you have if you are basing it off of a current brochure, or links to sites that have brochures you like. If you have photos, etc, please send as well. I will need as much information to understand what you want to have so we can successfully work together.”

7. Timing

Indicate how long it will take you to complete this project. Make sure you estimate on the high side – nothing can irritate a client faster than not delivering on-time. For my brochure, I indicated 3 weeks to be on the safe side of things.

8. Images

Images! Upload a banner image for your project that will catch the eye when they open up your project. The images underneath should be snapshots of your projects and the first image you upload will be the image used for your Project’s cover, so choose wisely! I uploaded two brochure covers I worked on, then uploaded a PDF of a brochure sample for people to view a project sample.

9. Publish

Once complete, hit “Publish.” You did it! See below You will see additional projects listed at the bottom so that the Company can click directly on other projects you have in the system.
